The tribal communities of Thekkady, which have a total population of around 2000, live in perfect harmony with Nature. Five ethnically different communities -- the Mannans, the Paliyas, the Uralis, the Mala-arayas and the Malampandarams -- have settled in Kumily panchayat, mainly on the outskirts of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Though they used to earn their living through traditional occupations like fishing and agriculture, with the advent of eco-tourism initiatives, they have found alternative jobs. They actively take part in the tourism-related programmes and serve as guides for tourists or as forest guards to prevent poaching and other illegal activities. Kofiland Resorts offers guests a choice of half and full day treks through routes that run in different directions through the plantation on the hill across the lake. Another option is to spend the night camping outdoor on the plantation after a half day trek in the afternoon. Tents are provided and catering services offered. Different varieties of hardwood and wild trees like rosewood, teak, jackfruit, Kanna, Waga, murikku. The 100-acre coffee and spice plantation surrounding Kofiland Resorts is a delightful voyage of discovery with many pleasant adventures along the way. The first coffee was planted in 1920. The barks from these trees were used by Pharmaceutical companies to cure fever and another recurring sickness. This was also the first plantation in the Idukki district to have planted the genus Arabica coffee plant. Today the plantation mainly consists of coffee - Arabica and Robusta, pepper and cardamom. In the depths of the plantation, pathways wind through coffee bushes with plump, red coffee berries, past vines of pepper and vanilla, past cardamom bushes and tracts of clove, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric and nutmeg. Ottakathalamedu Ottakathalamedu has started becoming popular among tourists very recently. Located at a distance of 4 km from Thekaddy , it is a beautiful bike ride from Thekaddy to here. Situated at an altitude of 1300 m above sea level, it offers a breathtaking view of Kumily, Periyar Tiger Reserve, spice gardens and some villages of Tamil Nadu. Be careful while standing at edges because winds can be very strong sometimes. If you love to do some landscape photography, don’t forget to pack your wide angle lens.
