The concept of bamboo raft tourism in Thekkady owes its existence to these simple rafts built and used by the tribals in the sanctuary and only tribals are permitted inside the Periyar wildlife sanctuary in Kerala.
This is a dawn to dusk range hiking and rafting programme through some of the richest forest tracts of Periyar Tiger Reserve. Starting at 8 am from the boat landing, a mosaic of habitats will be traversed before the party gets into rafts made of bamboos.
Tourists will be taken through the thick forests on trek followed by three hours through the catchments area of the Periyar Tiger Reserve on a bamboo raft.The area being one of the richest and most diverse biodiversity spots in the Western Ghats, one can get a panoramic view of forest-clad hills reflected on the lake.
The forests are rich in bird life and arboreal animals like giant squirrel and Nilgiri langur. The rafting is for about three hours and one gets a panoramic view of forest-clad hills reflected on the lake. Animals like elephant, gaur and sambar are sighted keeping close to the edges of the lake.
Butterflies with fascinating wing patterns, flowers with dazzling hues, wild animals like elephants, gaur, sambar... all are here by the banks to welcome you. This is one of the richest and most diverse biodiversity spots in the Western Ghats. The reflection of the forest-clad hills on the lake is an arresting spectacle.
Each team comprising ten tourists will be accompanied by an armed forest guard and four guides. Most of these guides belong to the tribal communities, who are familiar with every nook and cranny of these dense forests. They are part of the Eco-Development Project launched by the government. The travellers will be provided breakfast comprising bread, jam, and fruits. Tea, snacks and packed lunch will also be served the en route.
