The very sound of the word Thekkady conjures up images of elephants, unending chains of hills and spice scented plantations. The Periyar forests of Thekkady is one of the finest wildlife reserves in India. Border Hiking in Thekkady is a full-day conservation-oriented hard hiking programme along the borders of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. the trek starts at eight in the morning and goes on until the evening. A group of 13 people comprising of 10 tourists, 2 guides and 1 armed guard begin trekking in the morning.
During your trek through various kinds of terrain, you can enjoy the rich flora and fauna of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The trek route covers altitudinal ranges from 900 meters to 1300 meters and the view of the plains below is simply mesmerizing. On reaching appropriate altitudes, one can make out the lofty escarpments that border the Periyar National Park. A golden opportunity to get a closer look at Thekkady's wildlife, the hike enables chance encounters with the elephant, gaur and sloth bear apart from birds and butterflies. The guides, many of whom are reformed ex-poachers now committed to protecting the pristinity of Thekkady's wildlife, will narrate gripping tales of their encounters with the wildlife. Their immense knowledge about the flora and fauna of the Periyar Tiger Reserve and its surrounding areas will provide tourists with a new insight into life in the forests.
A maximum of 10 tourists can take part in the programme, in two groups. Guides and armed forest guards will accompany each group for tours of the plantation and visits to tribal settlements. Such tours are conducted under the aegis of the District Tourism Information Office at Thekkady.
Thekkady is a destination for all season. At any time you can make a visit to Thekkady. But, winter will be the best time to be at Thekkady. The cool and pleasant climate will help you to explore this place beautifully. Most of the festivals at Thekkady take place during the winter season.
