The Periyar Tiger Reserve - Thekkady -4.2 km from Kofiland

The Periyar Tiger Reserve is Kerala's most popular wildlife sanctuary. Extending over an area 777 km. in size with a 26km artificial lake, the sanctuary is home to elephants, tigers, bison, wild boars, langurs and deer and a fascinating variety of other species. Evergreen and semi evergreen rainforests with the canopy at times reaching a height of 40 to 50 metres vegetate the reserve. The Periyar and Pamba rivers flow through the forest to form a large artificial lake where the animals come to drink. Community-based ecotourism is the hallmark of the Periyar Tiger Reserve with programs conducted by locals who, by taking tourists along enhance the visitor experience with their intimate knowledge of the forest beside helping in protecting the park and earning a livelihood out of it. Guests at Kofiland resorts may go on guided safaris through the park at different times during the day and at night besides availing of the boat rides on the lake. The boats are special in that they enable to get close to animals that come to drink at different points along the lake's shore.
